Wedding Styling Mistakes You Need to Avoid

Planning your wedding is one of the most exciting experiences of your life—but when it comes to styling, it’s surprisingly easy to get things slightly (or very) wrong. The smallest details can make the biggest difference, and overlooking them can affect the overall look and feel of your day.

Here are the most common wedding styling mistakes—and how to avoid them so your day looks as beautiful as you’ve imagined.

1. Trying to Do Too Many Themes at Once

One of the biggest mistakes couples make is mixing too many styles. Rustic, modern, boho, glam… all in one wedding? It quickly becomes visually confusing.

Avoid it:
Pick one clear aesthetic and stick to it. You can layer in subtle influences, but your styling should feel cohesive from start to finish.

2. Ignoring the Venue’s Natural Style

Your venue already has a personality—and fighting against it rarely works. The venue style can often dictate what theme you should lean into. Going for a Manor house? How would you describe the interior of the Manor house? Traditional, eclectic, modern?

Avoid it:
Work with your venue, not against it. A grand ballroom calls for elegance, while a barn or outdoor space suits a more relaxed, organic style.

3. Colour Palette used Incorrectly

Whether you go for one or five colours for your wedding styling, how you use the colours is important. Colours help too create a feeling and draw the eye. Pastels can create a sense of calm, bold and bright colours can feel fun, whereas dark tones creates a more moody setting. You can’t go wrong with colours but it’s how they are used which makes all the difference.

Avoid it:

Stick to a defined colour palette (typically 2–4 colours) and carry it through everything: flowers, stationery, linens, and décor. Consider the colour wheel and how the colours work together. Don’t be afraid to add tones, shades and patterns to add more depth to your style.

4. Overcrowding Tables

It’s tempting to go all out with centrepieces, candles, favours, table numbers… but too much can feel cluttered and overwhelming.

Avoid it:
Focus on a few key elements and give them space to shine. Remember: less is often more when it comes to styling and if there is more than one design you like, think about using the designs on alternate tables.

5. Poor Lighting Choices

Lighting is often an afterthought, but it completely transforms your wedding atmosphere. Lighting adds to the ambience of your wedding and can highlight key features in the space.

Avoid it:
Think about lighting early. Soft, warm lighting like candles, fairy lights, or festoon lighting creates a romantic and inviting feel—especially in the evening.

6. The Attire Doesn’t Match the Wedding Style

The attire of your wedding party needs to equally work with the wedding style. If you are going for a traditional wedding style, open button shirts and chinos tell a different story. You want the colour scheme to work with the attire.

Avoid it:

Start with your wedding dress style. This can determine the rest of the style of the wedding. Simple designs tend to lend themselves more to modern aesthetics and lace A-lines or ballgowns tend to style best with traditional wedding styles. The rest of the bridal party should compliment you and the style of the wedding.

7. Forgetting About Guest Experience

Styling isn’t just about how things look—it’s about how they feel.

Avoid it:
Make sure your design choices don’t inconvenience your guests. For example:

  • Can guests see over centrepieces?
  • Is signage clear and easy to read?
  • Is there enough space to move comfortably?

7. Skipping a Wedding Stylist

Many couples collect beautiful ideas but struggle to bring them together into one clear vision. A Wedding Stylist can hone into your preferred style, colours and vibe to ensure the look creates the most impact within your budget. They can talk through ideas and propose options that best work for the space.

Avoid it:
Book a Wedding Stylist to help bring your vision together and create a cohesive look throughout.
