Jodie Yang Cooper is a wedding singer and DJ based in Devon. Her passion has taken her all across the world to perform at many prestige events for the likes of YSL, The Ritz Carlton, Warner Hotels, Mercedes Benz, Porsche, Ministry of Sound, P&O and Thompson Holidays just to name a few.
“I only ever wanted to be a singer. I was the kid that was singing in the mirror with a hairbrush from a very young age.”
I got the opportunity to speak with Jodie to find out how she became a wedding singer and DJ and what trends she predicts for entertainment in 2021 & 2022.
The Person Behind the Microphone
My name is Jodie, I am a 35 years old singer DJ born up north, but currently living in Torquay. I have been lucky enough over the years to have travelled worldwide with my performing. During the pandemic, I have taken up the role as a carer for the NHS while life gets back to normal while still finding the time to record with several dance music producers. Aside from that I am also a singing teacher and currently have 10 students who I teach online.
What Is It You Do?
I am predominantly a female singer DJ which involves performing LIVE vocals while DJ-ing at the same time. My style is predominantly 90’s, club classics, dance, house and open format music. My sets can also include powerhouse classics such as ‘Proud Mary’ for the wedding crowds that want to have a taste of nostalgia.
Alongside this I am also a solo singer. My sets include anything from Jazz, standards and ballads, but I can learn specific songs for when you walk down the aisle, or for your first dance at no extra cost.
How Did You Get Into Singing & DJ-ing?
Since the age of 10, I started singing lessons weekly and sang in productions of ‘ Oliver’, ‘Half a Sixpence’ and ’Showboat’ with a local amateur dramatics society. I began winning categories in music festivals around North East Lincolnshire so it only seemed natural to further my education at the London College of Music & Speech and get a degree in Music & Media Management at London Metropolitan University.
At Uni I would regularly go to commercial house nights at Fabric, The Cross, Turnmills and Egg & Heaven. My love of trance, progressive and house music inspired me to buy my first pioneer controller and give DJ-ing a go.
What Inspires Your Performing?
I started out life in a family that had huge diverse musical tastes. My mother loved everything dance and disco, whereas my father loved easy listening driving playlists and rock n roll.
I was immersed in a world of Ace of Base, Black Box, MC hammer, Whitney Houston, The Beatles and Dire Straits which in time surely influenced me, as a child, to become a huge Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder and electronic dance music fan.
What’s Your Favourite Aspect of Your Job?
The simple answer is EVERYTHING, there is nothing not to love….which is why I am counting down the days until I can get back to performing full time. I LOVE singing and DJ-ing together and seeing the surprise on peoples faces when I crank out a big tune!
What’s Your Biggest Career Accomplishment?
I was the warm up act for Kylie Minogue in the Mercedes Benz Arena in Berlin. It was a huge shock and I didn’t know until I got there. I felt so honoured to be sharing the stage with a superstar.
What’s Your Most Memorable Moment?
Definitely getting to the live stages of Chinese Idol in 2015, it was the weirdest and most wonderful time of my singing career that’s for sure!
What Packages Do You Offer?
My services can be tailored to suit any couples request. I can be a solo singer with backing tracks, a solo singer accompanied with a pianist, a DJ only, or a singer DJ with the option to add a sax player too. I am happy to work with couples to create their special day, so if they wanted a pianist for the ceremony, singer and pianist for the wedding breakfast and then DJ for the evening, it can all be doable.
What Trends Do You Expect For 2021/2022?
As weddings are having to scale down because of the restrictions I see couples wanting to spend more money on entertainment. Performers who are offering additional services will also be popular so couples can keep those supplier numbers to a minimum. With my package, couples can get more out of their booking with the option to have a singer and a DJ all rolled into one person!
When the restrictions ease, I also predict anything interactive, upbeat and party, party, party will be a big trend. We have been cooped up for so long due to lockdown, so people are going to just want to dance and enjoy themselves to the max.
It’s incredible to hear all the different events Jodie has worked on. And what an experience to be Kylie Minogues supporting act!
