Looking at an image can make you remember a feeling or a time more clearly

After 3 years Melanie decided to set up her own business and has since had the pleasure of photographing hundreds of beautiful couples. I got the opportunity to speak with Melanie to hear her tips on selecting the right photographer and what a typical wedding day is like for her.

1. The Person Behind the Camera

Melanie Barnfield Photography

I am a wife to James, Mummy to Elliott and Noah, Scruff the cat and Stanley the dog! I love to practice Yoga and try to do this every day if I can. I LOVE the beach, the sun and being outdoors and recently started sea swimming which has allowed me to conquer my fear of the sea. I also love seeing my friends, going to music concerts, having BBQ’s and beer as well as dancing around the front room and getting the giggles!

2. What Type of Products / Services Do You Offer?

My services include half day or full day photo coverage with the option to have a second photographer. Couples get to choose from a selection of handcrafted boxes with a USB of their edited images and a selection of fine art prints. There is also the option to purchase a bespoke wedding album, designed by Mel to tell the story of their day, and a beautiful Wall Art to show off their favourite images.

3. How Did You Get Into Photography?

I have always loved taking photo’s. Taking photos allows me to capture moments and make memories. Looking back over photos is one of my most favourite things to do! I also love how taking photos can capture a split second, from eye contact to an emotional hug.

4. What’s a Typical Wedding Day Like For You?

My main aim is to make sure my couple’s have the best, stress free day. I usually arrive to a wedding around one and a half hours before the Bride aim’s to get her dress on. To begin with I capture the dress, flowers, jewellery, details and all the girls together.

If the couple are getting ready in the same place I will also go to their other half’s to get some before pictures of them too. There is the option of having a second photographer to allow photos to be taken simultaneously in time so both moments are captured.

The ceremony is always a lovely time, I capture this in an unobtrusive manner, with as little distraction as possible. Then we are into confetti shots and a well deserved drink!  I tend to take my couple away for 20 minutes or so to get some lovely couple shots. It’s a great a chance for the couple to have a bit of time together to digest what’s just happened and take in the day before going back to see family and friends.

We discuss any family shots required and try to get these done with as little fuss as possible to include formal pictures and then some fun pictures. While the couple are hanging out with their guests, I will grab pictures of the room, cake and the finer details before finally cruising around getting shots of everyone enjoying themselves!

5. What’s Your Favourite Aspect of the Job?

I love every aspect to be honest, meeting my couple to discuss their plans, capturing the day and then editing the images afterwards.  It’s a buzz I feed off and I just love seeing everyone smiling and being together.  I feel really honoured and privileged to be able to visit beautiful venues and spend the day with lovely people who are all celebrating LOVE!

6. What’s Your Most Memorable Photo?

Gosh this is a tough question, I have taken so many! I remember one specific Dad seeing his daughter and being really emotional. Capturing that was precious.  One wedding which sticks in my head was when it was snowing and just getting to the venue was an adventure. Taking photo’s out in a snow blizzard was really memorable.

7.  What Tips Would You Give Couples Who Are Looking for a Photographer for Their Wedding Day?

The most important thing is that you feel comfortable with your photographer. The photographer is with you through each part of your day and become a massive part of it. The getting ready and saying ‘I do’, to kicking off your shoes and dancing!  You need to feel like they can be your friend and not just your photographer.

It’s a massive responsibility to capture someone’s wedding and it’s important that you make sure your photographer has the experience and knowledge on how to get the best from you and your day.  I recommend asking to see images from a full wedding to ensure that your photographer offer what you are looking for.
